Howick is a small country town located in the uMgungundlovu District (the Midlands) of the KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa. Located on the N3 freeway, about 1050m above sea level, 90km from Durban and 20km from Pietermaritzburg (the capital of KZN), it enjoys warm summers and cold chilly winters when snow falls on the nearby Drakensberg.

In the centre of the town, Howick Falls thunders 95m over dolerite cliffs on the Umgeni River which passes through Howick on its way to the Indian Ocean. The Zulu people called the falls KwaNogqaza, which means "Place of the Tall One". According to local legend the pool at the bottom of the falls is the residence of the Inkhanyamba, an eel like creature with a horse like head. Rising periodically, tornado like, from his lair, an angry Inkhanyamba causes storms with thunder and lightning and even occasionally devastating Tornados and floods. As he sinks back into the tranquillity of the pool, a rainbow stretches over the Falls, restoring peace to the storm battered surrounding countryside. The locals believe that only sangomas can safely approach the falls, and then only to offer prayers and other acts of worship to the inkanyamba, ancestral spirits and the 'Great God'.

Also in Howick are Cascade Falls (25 m) and Shelter Falls (37 m), while Karkloof Falls (105 m) is 16 km to the east.
